Pretože oktenidín má dobrú histokompatibilitu, široké antibakteriálne spektrum, rýchly a dlhotrvajúci účinok, má ideálnu perspektívu aplikácie v lokálnej liečbe mikrobiálnych infekcií.

Účinnosť oktenidínu proti Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli a Candida albicans je lepšia ako 4% chlórhexidín.
